Old Dominion tops LSU 70-61

The Tigers dropped their first game of the season Friday night to Old Dominion in the first round of the Paradise Jam.

LSU (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season versus Old Dominion (3-0) Friday night, 70-61, in the Tigers’ opening game in the 2014 Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

Monarchs guard Trey Freeman poured in a game-high 25 points while ODU’s starting frontcourt duo of Richard Ross and Jonathan Arledge combined for 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Jarell Martin registered his third straight double-double to begin the season for LSU, totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers went through too many offensive droughts in the ballgame.

Chief among them was the 23-2 run Old Dominion authored after LSU took a 28-17 lead with 6:59 left in the first half. That Monarch reign carried over into the second half and held up despite a late Tiger charge, spurred on by Tim Quarterman’s eight second-half points.

Old Dominion hurt LSU from behind the arc, making 7-of-14 attempts compared to a 5-of-16 effort from deep by the Bayou Bengals. Johnny Jones’ crew also turned it over 16 times against nine from the Monarchs.

LSU will play Weber State in a loser's bracket game Saturday at 4 p.m. Central Time.

With the win Old Dominion will face Illinois State, which defeated Weber State 73-64, on Sunday at 8 p.m. Central Time.
