LSU (5-2) scored its biggest win of the young season Tuesday night in the PMAC, running roughshod over Massachusetts (5-3) by the final score of 82-60.
Junior point guard Josh Gray exploded for his highest point total in an LSU uniform, scoring 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including three makes in four tries from deep. Gray also tallied five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
"I think he's a tremendous guard," head coach Johnny Jones said in postgame interviews. "He's got good ball skills. He's an excellent passer. I think the big thing that he's noted for is ability to score. I think he got his scores throughout the game (tonight). They weren't just bunched up.
"He didn't just try to take over and come down to take shot after shot. His scores were spaced out tonight. Again, I thought that when they made their runs we were able to spread the floor. He was able to get to the basket and make great plays."
Three other Tigers finished in double figures. Jordan Mickey had a double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds), Jarell Martin finished with 12 points and Tim Quarterman was a spark plug off the bench as usual, totaling 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Cady Lalanne led the way for the Minutemen, posting 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Tigers never led by less than nine in the second half after going into intermission with a 44-32 lead. It was only the second time this season LSU held a lead at halftime.
LSU is back in action Thursday night at West Virginia as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
"It's a quick turnaround for us," Jones noted. "They're a top-15 basketball team, and it's going to take that type of effort to play against a team with the quality of West Virginia. We've got to do a great job of making sure we're composed in that type of environment being on the road."
