NASHVILLE – He hasn't played in a game for LSU since Sept. 27, but Dwayne Thomas is not a forgotten man in the Tigers' locker room.
The versatile Thomas, a redshirt sophomore from New Orleans, served as LSU's nickel back to open the 2014 season before tearing his right ACL in the team's fifth game, at home versus New Mexico State.
Prior to the injury Thomas was excelling in his role, having notched 24 tackles, 2.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception and two quarterback hurries in less 18 quarters of action.
A little more than a month ago, head coach Les Miles took time to update the status of one of his best up-and-coming defenders.
"He’s working hard. His rehabilitation is coming along very nicely," Miles explained to reporters on Nov. 24. "Hope to have him back for the spring. I don’t know if that’s possible, but as hard as he’s working, we would think that’s likely."
Thomas obviously isn't anywhere near being able to practice, but the O.P. Walker product did travel with the team to Nashville.
In my one-on-one interview with Thomas (see below), he gave the latest update on his rehab process, talked about mentoring the younger defensive backs and ventured a guess at where he'll line up next season in the secondary.
He also shared an interesting take on teammate Rashard Robinson, a starting cornerback for LSU most of this season before he was indefinitely suspended in advance of the Alabama game.
"I have a real good feeling he's coming back," said Thomas. "My hope's not down that he won't because I know he will. I can't wait to get back out there playing with him, and I know these guys can't (either).
"Once we get back to the summer and the spring, and all of us together as one big family again, it'll be exciting. A couple of guys may leave out early, but with a lot of us coming back and still having that chemistry going, it'll be fun."
