John Chavis has coached his final game with LSU.
The defensive coordinator agreed to leave Baton Rouge and accepted the same position with Texas A&M on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. Chavis' new deal with the Aggies is reportedly for three-plus years and $1.7 million per.
Reports surfaced before LSU's bowl game Tuesday that Chavis was heavily leaning toward leaving LSU. He refused to comment on the situation when speaking to reports after the game. Les Miles hinted that his defensive coordinator was likely gone though, speaking in the past tense about Chavis' career with the Tigers.
According to multiple reports Wednesday morning, Chavis did not fly with the team to Baton Rouge after meeting with Miles Tuesday night. He flew back to his family home in Tennessee to make a final decision and has reportedly opted to join Kevin Sumlin's staff in College Station.
He's expected to be officially announced within the next 24 hours. LSU has not made comment as of Wednesday afternoon.
Chavis was the only assistant coach that remained unsigned to a new deal with LSU. He reportedly had a contract worth $4 million over three years but did not agree to it because of a concern in the wording of the deal. He was unhappy with a clause that would have terminated his contract in six months should Miles no longer be the head coach.
If the terms of Chavis' new contract with Texas A&M are correct, he will become the highest paid assistant in the country along with Auburn's Will Muschamp. He was already in the top three while at LSU, making $1.3 million per year with the Tigers.
There's been some speculation that defensive line coach Brick Haley would follow Chavis to Texas A&M. As of Wednesday afternoon though, he is expected to stay in Baton Rouge.
