He didn’t bat an eye when John Chavis left for Texas A&M. Frank Wilson has been his lead recruiter anyway, but Washington knew the Tigers would find a great replacement. So he was excited when LSU announced Kevin Steele and Ed Orgeron would be joining the defensive staff.
He had an opportunity to spend time with both men during his official visit this past weekend.
“It was good,” Washington said. “We talked about a lot of stuff, how the team’s going to be next year. They can’t wait to bring me in and win a national championship.”
Washington already knew Orgeron before this weekend, so the visit was all about strengthening that relationship. Orgeron’s enthusiasm was infectious.
“It was all day,” Washington said. “That’s all he wanted to do was talk. He was recruiting me while he was at USC, so me and him getting acquainted wasn’t a big problem. I love him. He brings high expectations and high energy.”
Washington also made sure to pick the brain of his new defensive coordinator.
“I actually sat with [Coach Steele] at dinner, and we talked about his defense,” Washington said. “They really want me to be a big factor in pass rushing, so that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m ready for it. It’s just a big process.”
Washington was hosted by former Edna Karr teammate Donnie Alexander and fellow New Orleans native Dwayne Thomas. He’s been to LSU so many times over the last year that he needed to see anything new. So this weekend was all about feeling like a Tiger.
“It was good being one of the boys,” Washington said. “We went a lot of places, hung out. That was it. I’ve been at LSU almost every weekend, so it was really the same because I already know people…
“[Alexander and Thomas] are my brothers. I’ve been knowing them since they’re from New Orleans. I was also with Davon Godchaux, a lot of people. I was really with the whole team.”
And with National Signing Day a little more than two weeks away, it won’t be much longer until he he’s officially a part of that team.
“I’m picking out my hat already,” Washington said. “I’m very excited, ready to get it over with.”
