Jefferson took his official visit to LSU this past weekend, and the Tigers felt they'd done enough to remain in the mix. Bradley Dale Peveto and Ed Orgeron rolled out the red carpet for Jefferson, but that apparently wasn't enough.
Jefferson posted Monday morning on Twitter that he had narrowed his focus to four schools — Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida. That means LSU is out.
Wednesday I will be deciding between Auburn,Ole miss,Florida, or Alabama... Thanks for everything!— 7 (@cecejeferson7) February 2, 2015
Ole Miss would seem to be the team to beat, but all four schools have had reason to be confident through this cycle. He could land at either one of those programs, and that wouldn't be a surprise.
It was always a long shot for the Tigers to land Jefferson, but LSU at least expected to have a hat on the table when he announced. He was one of the top remaining defensive ends left on the board, so the Tigers will have to hope they land somebody else in these next 48 hours.
Jefferson's decision leaves all eyes on Arden Key, who will announce Monday night. We've made our prediction that LSU lands Key, and that would definitely alleviate the damage from missing on Jefferson.
Prince Tega Wanogho is the other DE still on the board. He seems a heavy lean to Auburn though, but so long as LSU lands Key, it should be enough to satisfy LSU's need at that position.
