Jones: Not a 'severe injury' for Mickey

LSU head coach Johnny Jones gave injury updates Monday on two key members of the Tigers' rotation - forward Jordan Mickey and freshman guard Jalyn Patterson.

When LSU (16-5, 5-3) lost at Mississippi State over the weekend, the Tigers were without freshman guard Jalyn Patterson for the second straight game and watched leading scorer and rebounder Jordan Mickey sustain an injury to his right ankle.

Mickey, after a brief rest, did play through the pain, finishing with 25 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, but the sophomore forward from Dallas was clearly affected down the stretch.

On Monday morning head coach Johnny Jones gave brief injury updates on both players in LSU's regular rotation.

"We'll know more about them this afternoon. Hopefully both of them should be fine as we start back at practice," Jones said on the SEC Coaches Teleconference. "Jordan's injury to his ankle hampered him somewhat during the game. We're hopeful (he) should be good with a little rest."

Elaborating a little more on a follow-up question, Jones gave an indication that Mickey's injury isn't too serious. He's also counting on a few days' extra rest, since the Bayou Bengals' next game is Thursday versus Auburn, to benefit Mickey in this situation.

"The good thing is we don't have a Tuesday game. His (Mickey's) injury occurred in an early game on Saturday. We don't play again until Thursday," explained Jones. "That gives us a considerable amount of time to not only treat but rest his injury. It wasn't a serve injury."

Onto Patterson, who Jones said "showed signs" last week that he's returning to form after taking a fall during the Vanderbilt game Jan. 24 ...

"We're hopeful he'll be back in uniform with us this Thursday. We wanted to take the right precautions," LSU's third-year coach continued. "It was symptom-free at the time (in Nashville), and I think things started bothering him a little later after we returned back home."

The Tigers will embark on a stretch with three home games in six days with Auburn in town Thursday night. Alabama hits the PMAC Saturday afternoon followed by the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats next Tuesday evening.
