Martin, LSU dust Auburn 84-61

The Bayou Bengals scored their 20th win of the season on the Plains, rolling Auburn 84-61 behind 25 points from Jarell Martin and a career night from Jalyn Patterson.

Choose your storyline because LSU (20-8, 9-6) fulfilled them all on Tuesday night.

The Bayou Bengals pulled away in the second half at Auburn (12-16, 4-11), thumping the home-standing Tigers 84-61 to secure a much-needed victory in the chase for an NCAA Tournament berth.

In the process Johnny Jones cemented his second 20-win season in three years at the helm. LSU also solidified a winning road record in SEC play, currently at 5-3 away from the PMAC after winning a combined five league road games the last two seasons.

Sophomore forward Jordan Mickey also entered the history books. He finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three blocks, but his second block, which occurred early in the second half, gave Mickey 100 rejections for the season. He now joins Shaquille O'Neal as the only Tigers to author multiple 100-block campaigns during their stays on the bayou.

Freshman guard Jalyn Patterson notched his own accomplishments in Auburn Arena, scoring 16 points and dishing out seven assists, both career highs for the native of Alpharetta, Ga.

But the true ringleader for the purple and gold, driving the LSU victory, was Jarell Martin. He continued his strong play of late with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go with 12 rebounds and two steals.

Also in double figures for LSU was Keith Hornsby with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Auburn kept it close for the opening 25 minutes, down only 41-34 at the half and multiple times within four or five in the opening minutes of the second stanza, but Bruce Pearl's crew fell victim to an LSU avalanche as the visitors shot an uncanny 57.8% from the field.

Cinmeon Bowers led Auburn with 16 points and six rebounds while K.T. Harrell, the SEC's leading scorer coming in, finished with just 14 points, below his season average.

LSU is back in action Saturday afternoon with Ole Miss headed to Baton Rouge for a crucial SEC showdown.
