JaVonte Smart remains a hot name in Louisiana

A recent state-title winner, 2018 prospect JaVonte Smart carries plenty of momentum into this summer. He spoke with TSD about his plans to improve and grow his game.

TSD had the chance in the last week to catch up briefly with one of Louisiana's top basketball prospects - 2018 guard JaVonte Smart.

Although Smart is only at the end of his freshman year, he's already logged time in the USA Basketball Developmental Camp and more recently helped carry Scotlandville to the Class 5A state title, showcasing heroics aplenty in the overtime semifinal win over Byrd.

Check out what Smart, playing AAU ball for Elfrid Payton Elite on Nike's EYBL circuit, had to say on a number of topics, including what he'll be working on this summer.

"That semifinal game was good. I was so happy to get my team to the state championship ... (Since we won it) it's been amazing. Everybody's been sending their congratulations."
- On leaving Lake Charles with a title

"That was a great tournament. We played against one of the top players in 2016 (in Malik Monk). We also went all the way to the championship game and lost it by six. We actually played against him [Monk] twice. I thought we really competed well against him."
- On playing last weekend at the Warmup in Bentonville

"My strength, my jumping ability and just having fun playing with new people. I also want to challenge myself for next year."
- On what he wants to improve in his game this summer

"I really don't know. To be honest I really don't check on all that yet."
- On recruiting (Smart added he's had no contact with college coaches lately)

Smart did take an unofficial visit to LSU last fall, attending a home football game the same weekend that 2017 in-state prospect Cedric Russell committed and, coincidentally, 2015 prospect Brandon Sampson was on his official visit.

During the four-game tournament in Bentonville, Smart averaged 8.5 points on a guard-heavy team and twice had three assists or more.
