Smart invited to USA U16 Training Camp

Baton Rouge's JaVonte Smart is one of 27 U.S. players under 16 hand-picked to attend training camp for the FIBA Americas Championship.

Scotlandville's JaVonte Smart has been invited to participate in training camp for the 2015-16 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team, the National Team Committee announced on Thursday.

Smart, a 2018 prospect who recently took home Most Outstanding Player honors in leading the Hornets to the 5A state title, is one of 27 players that will prep for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, scheduled for June 10-14.

Prior to that the team will train in Colorado Springs from May 28 to June 6, reducing the roster to just 12 players.

The top four finishers in the Argentine tournament will play in the FIBA U17 World Championships.

"We had most of these guys out last October for our USA Junior National Team mini-camp and overall we’ve got a really good combination of good bigs who are very skilled, some good shooters and some very good point guards," said USA head coach Don Showalter (Iowa City H.S., Iowa). "So, we have a really good combination of players. This will be a good group to work with over the next couple of years, and I like our chances at the U16s with these guys."

Smart was one of the players to attend the mini-camp in October. Watch Scout's highlights of Smart in action from that camp below.
