LSU represented in SEC awards, All-SEC teams

Paul Mainieri was named SEC Coach of the Year, Alex Lange picked as SEC Freshman of the Year and LSU placed five players on the All-SEC First Team.

LSU received SEC Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors in addition to placing five players on the All-SEC First Team, as the conference awards were announced Monday.

Paul Mainieri picked up SEC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his LSU career. The previous came in 2009, when he led the Tigers to their sixth national championship. It's the 15th time an LSU coach has received that honor. Skip Bertman leads the way with seven SEC Coach of the Year awards.

Mainieri and the Tigers earned their 16th regular season SEC title this past weekend. They'll begin their journey for a third consecutive SEC Tournament title on Wednesday.

Pitcher Alex Lange was named the SEC Freshman of the Year with a 10-0 record in his first collegiate season. Lange finished his freshman campaign second in the SEC in ERA (2.11) and strikeouts (91). He was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times and is one of 30 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list.

Lange is the fifth LSU player to be selected SEC Freshman of the Year. The previous four: Alex Bregman (2013), Matty Ott (2009), Lane Mestepey (2001) and Mike Fontenot (2000).

LSU also placed a school-record five players on the All-SEC First Team. It's the second time in three years LSU has landed that many players on the first team. It had never happened prior to 2013. Lange, Kade Scivicque, Bregman, Andrew Stevenson and Conner Hale represent LSU on the first team.

It's the second time Bregman has been named All-SEC First Team.

Chris Chinea was chosen to the All-SEC Second Team. LSU also placed four players on the All-SEC Defensive Team (Bregman, Scivicque, Stevenson and Mark Laird).
