Tigers win WCWS opener

Freshman Carley Hoover allowed only one run on six hits as LSU toppled Auburn 6-1 in the two teams' opening game of the Women's College World Series.

Beth Torina's LSU softball team advanced into the winner's bracket of the Women's College World Series thanks to a 6-1 win over Auburn (54-10) Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City.

The Tigers (51-12) thrived on a stellar pitching effort from freshman Carley Hoover, who struck out five Auburn Tigers and allowed only one run on six hits. She moved to 18-5 on the season for the Bayou Bengals.

Offensively LSU found its power stroke at OGE Energy Field, clubbing two home runs, including a solo bomb in the top of the first inning from Bianka Bell.

LSU moves on to play top-seeded Florida, who the Tigers beat two out of three in Gainesville in March, Friday at 6 p.m.

The Gators advanced into the winner's bracket via a 7-2 win over Tennessee.
