The SEC Network will tell the tragic story of former LSU football coach Bo Rein as part of its SEC Storied series.
LSU hired Rein after the 1979 season to steer the program into a new decade. Rein would never coach a game for the Tigers though. A month after accepting the position, his plane crashed while returning home from a recruiting trip, leaving no survivors.
LSU honored Rein's family during the Ole Miss game last season, their first time in Tiger Stadium.
The documentary titled "The Bo You Don't Know" will air Sept. 15 on the SEC Network at 8 p.m.
Here's the synopsis released by the SEC for the Bo Rein documentary:
"When the name "Bo" is uttered in SEC circles, images of Bo Jackson's domination at Auburn quickly come to mind. But there is another Bo who is likely far less familiar to SEC followers. That would be Robert "Bo" Rein, whose pedigree could be traced to stints under Woody Hayes, Lou Holtz, and Frank Broyles. A former baseball and football standout at Ohio State, Rein was building a reputation as an innovator who inspired those around him. He became the youngest head coach in major college football when he took over at NC State at the age of 30. He brought the Wolfpack national rankings, bowl wins and an ACC title.
"At the end of the 1979 season, LSU hired Rein, hoping that his youthful energy could revitalize its program. But the unthinkable happened. Returning from a recruiting trip on January 10, 1980, the small plane in which he was flying crashed in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,000 miles off course. That tragedy devastated his family and friends and left so many others wondering, 'What might have been?'"
ESPN Films launched the SEC Storied series in 2011. LSU has previously been the focus of films centered around Lolo Jones and the relationship between Shaquille O'Neal and Dale Brown.
The conference announced four other new films that will debut this fall in addition to "The Bo You Don't Know." One tells the story of former Florida Gator Danny Wuerffel and the role he played in helping New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina.
