LSU DB Jalen Mills suffers ankle injury

LSU safety Jalen Mills is expected to miss the start of the season after injuring his ankle Thursday.

Senior LSU safety Jalen Mills is expected to miss the start of the season after suffering a serious ankle injury Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette could only confirm that Mills was injured but did not specify what exactly was wrong or how much time he could miss. According to the Advocate, Mills is expected to miss at least the "first game or two." Nola.com reports Mills broke his fibula and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Mills was expected to be LSU's starting free safety this season. He also moves down to nickel in extra-DB packages.

Mills has started all 39 games of his LSU career, spending time at both corner and safety. He has six career interceptions and 186 tackles as a Tiger.

Rickey Jefferson will likely replace Mills in the starting lineup at safety. Dwayne Thomas would step in at nickel, while freshmen Kevin Toliver, Donte Jackson and Xaiver Lewis plus sophomore John Battle may see an increase in playing time as a result.
