LSU defensive back Jalen Mills did undergo surgery for the injury he suffered in practice last week, Les Miles announced at a press conference Tuesday.
The exact injury has not been released, but it's been reported as a severe ankle injury. Initial reports stated Mills would not require surgery, but Miles said Tuesday that Mills did. Miles did not say when exactly he underwent the operation.
Miles could not say when they expect Mills to return to the field. The South Carolina game Oct. 10 is now viewed as a possible best-case scenario.
"I’m still harboring personal feelings that we can get him back sooner rather than later," Miles said. "We don't know exactly how soon [he'll return]."
Mills was already expected to miss at least the first few game of the season, but surgery may result in more time out.
Rickey Jefferson has slid into the projected starting lineup at safety opposite Jamal Adams. Dwayne Thomas will likely take Mills' duty as nickelback, while Thomas also appears set to start at outside corner. Corey Thompson, Kevin Toliver and Edward Paris could also see added playing time in Mills' absence.
