2018 LSU Football Recruiting Reset: Defense

LSU's coaches are back on the road to see targets and commits so it's as good a time as ever to hit the reset on recruiting, starting with the defense.

Follow @BillyEmbody

LSU's recruiting on defense has been lights out for the most part with the Tigers racking up 13 of the 16 commitments on the defensive side of the ball.

The 2018 class is projected to have room for 29 signees and while the Tigers might not hit that number like the 2017 class didn't, it's already tight on defense so there's a good chance of that happening.

Here's Tiger Blitz' breakdown of where LSU's recruiting class stands on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive line missing one final piece

Nelson Jenkins III (© Greg Powers)

It's an interesting group that Ed Orgeron has assembled along the defensive line, currently void of the star power outside of Jamarcus Chatman, that a lot of the 2017 defensive line class had when LSU landed Tyler Shelvin over Alabama and Nebraska, Justin Thomas over South Carolina, Tennessee and others, and Neil Farrell over Florida State and USC.

Starting with Chatman, who spurned Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, Texas and others this past weekend when he committed, LSU is getting a high-motor, versatile player that can slide from weakside defensive end to strongside defensive end when his body fills out. You want to see him play lower at times, but he has time to develop.

His teammate Jaquon Griffin is more of project at 6-foot, 265 pounds. Griffin didn't have many options, but the Tigers like his potential, the way he plays with leverage and quickness. He's a player that could slide to nose tackle if he adds more weight and gets taller. He's a nose tackle in the making if those things happen.

While some might question the fit of Davin Cotton in a 3-4, Cotton will set up well at strongside defensive end in all likelihood as he adds weight to his frame. He's disruptive and has proven it against good competition.

Joining Cotton at that strongside defensive end spot is Nelson Jenkins III, who is physically the most ready now prospect committed along the line. He's got to develop more moves, which will come in time, but Jenkins solidifies that strongside defensive end spot and can slide to nose tackle on passing downs.

So where does LSU go from here? The Tigers need one true nose tackle for Aranda's 3-4 especially with Shelvin's potential grade issues. Here are a few options to look over and a note on each.

www.scout.com/player/199702-dare-rosenthal

Four-star defensive tackle Dare Rosenthal is between LSU and Alabama for the most part with Ole Miss and Florida State chasing, but plays his recruitment close to the vest. Rosenthal is best suited at offensive tackle, but the massive prospect wants to play defensive tackle. Rosenthal visited LSU for the Spring Game and if the Tigers can continue to get him on campus, they might jump ahead of the Tide, who he listed as No. 1 over the Tigers at The Opening in New Orleans.

www.scout.com/player/202689-keondre-coburn

Scout's No. 1 defensive tackle in Texas visited LSU for the Spring Game and got to speak with Ed Orgeron. Keondre Coburn plans a return visit and it's a bit early for him, but Texas, TCU and Texas A&M are also in the mix among others.

http://www.scout.com/player/215036-jeffery-johnson?s=107

Brookhaven (Miss.) defensive tackle Jeffery Johnson has visited LSU and been hot on the recruiting trail, picking up plenty of SEC offers. Johnson couldn't end up making it to the Spring Game, but came away impressed from his visit earlier in the spring.

http://www.scout.com/player/188210-trevor-trout?s=107

Trevor Trout is a target to watch for the Tigers who wants to visit, but just hasn't made his way down to LSU yet. He continues to impress on the camp circuit and if LSU can get a visit, he might be an option for LSU if they can make a big enough impression.

http://www.scout.com/player/200457-michael-thompson

The No. 2 defensive tackle overall hails from St. Louis as well. Michael Thompson is close to picking up a fifth star on his resume and made the trip down to Baton Rouge in March, which should help keep LSU in the mix here. The list of suitors will be long, but Thompson made the trip down with fellow Missouri Scout 300 prospect Ayodele Adeoye. If the Tigers can impress both, it might not be far-fetched for Orgeron to land his biggest catch yet along the defensive line.

http://www.scout.com/player/214042-tayland-humphrey

A junior college option to fill the missing piece at nose tackle is Tayland Humphrey, who has been trying to visit, but hasn't been able to make his way over just yet.

DAVIN COTTON BATTLE ON THE BORDER CLIPS

Linebacking corps of the future on board

LSU has its future at linebacker secure with the 2017 and 2018 hauls. The Tigers addressed losing Arden Key after this season with Co-Lin defensive end Travez Moore, who will come compete for time right away.

The big haul though as of now is Scout 100 defensive end Adam Anderson, who is the No. 1 defensive end in Georgia. If the Tigers can hang onto him, Anderson could be higher rated than five-star signee K'Lavon Chaisson as Anderson is already at No. 50 overall in the 2018 class.

Continuing at outside linebacker, Dallas Carter four-star defensive end Jarell Cherry is 100 percent in to the Tigers after visiting for the Spring Game and will be a nice addition and could potentially end up redshirting to continue to get his body right.

Moving inside, the Tigers have four-star Southern Lab linebacker Damone Clark and three-star Evangel Christian linebacker Micah Baskerville, both of whom are state champions. Both figure to be at the Rover and Mike respectively, but Aranda might not be done with his haul at linebacker.

With potentially one more spot, LSU can be selective about who it brings on board, but it's no secret that one more inside linebacker would be nice. Here are some names to watch for LSU.

http://www.scout.com/player/196458-dax-hollifield?s=107

Fresh off his visit to LSU, Dax Hollifield called Aranda one of the smartest coaches he's been around. Will that mean the Tigers suddenly jump to the top? That's another story, but the visit did wonders for LSU's chances, finally getting the four-star linebacker on campus.

http://www.scout.com/player/195238-merlin-robertson?s=107

From way out in California, four-star linebacker Merlin Robertson is a true plugger in the middle and could round out the linebacking haul as a true thumper at 240+. Robertson couldn't make it to LSU's Spring Game, but he's high on the Tigers.

http://www.scout.com/player/214407-ayodele-adeoye?s=107

Another player that just included LSU in his top schools is Ayodele Adeoye, who visited once already this spring and is looking to get back in the next month or two. The Scout 300 linebacker has Illinois, Oklahoma and now Texas in the mix and will be a nice add if the Tigers can get it done to round out their class.

http://www.scout.com/player/203799-jacquez-jones?s=107

Tuscaloosa (Ala.) linebacker Jacquez Jones listed Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State among his top schools last week, but has not narrowed anything down as his recruitment continues to pick up steam.

http://www.scout.com/player/211741-james-miller?s=107

Armwood (Fla.) linebacker James Miller named LSU his leader and took in LSU's spring practices. That doesn't mean LSU will land him and he's similar to Clark, who's already committed. Miller is a smart linebacker on the rise that LSU can likely wait and see how he continues to deveop before welcoming him in.

http://www.scout.com/player/214432-yasir-abdullah?s=107

A candidate at the F and Rover linebacker spots, Florida linebacker Yasir Abdullah has one of the best Nike Sparq scores around and could be one to watch, as he says LSU leads for him, but he won't be deciding until National Signing Day. LSU might be full by then.

http://www.scout.com/player/214185-la-dedric-jackson?s=107

Alabama linebacker La'Dedric Jackson has LSU in the lead over Ole Miss, Tennessee, NC State and Missouri, but he's another one that LSU can be patient with as a bigger target decides. Jackson doesn't have a timetable just yet.

http://www.scout.com/player/194072-teradja-mitchell?s=107

Last, but certainly not least, one of the top outside linebackers in the country, Teradja Mitchell has yet to make it down to LSU and has said he'd like to commit soon. If that's the case, the odds aren't looking great for the Tigers, but Mitchell maintains LSU is in the mix.

DAX HOLLIFIELD JUNIOR HIGHLIGHTS

Secondary waiting on a couple elite prospects

LSU's secondary is looking done for the most part, but Corey Raymond is waiting on a few difference makers that would propel the Tigers to most likely the top defensive back class yet again.

With Kelvin Joseph as the lone cornerback committed, the Tigers are already in a fight with Alabama to hang onto him, but are looking good as of late to do so. It's still a long time until February though.

At safety, LSU is done with Ar'darius WashingtonNadab Joseph and Caden Sterns committed. Each one brings a different edge to the secondary and will be welcome additions, especially Joseph and Sterns, who are both headed to All-American games. Washington is a versatile prospect that can play both nickel and safety.

Here are the few names to watch that are left on the board. Ideally, LSU lands two elite names, but would be happy with one and using the spot elsewhere potentially.

www.scout.com/player/195110-patrick-surtain

LSU's No. 1 overall target in all likelihood is Patrick Surtain, who sits in the Top 10 overall Scout prospects. Land him over Florida State and other major names, and the Tigers are in great shape.

http://www.scout.com/player/208056-jalen-green

Between the two Houston area cornerbacks on the board, Jalen Green might be right there with Anthony Cook on the board because he's still a bit unpolished. Green is outstanding already in coverage, but add Corey Raymond's tutoring and it might get even better.

http://www.scout.com/player/204917-anthony-cook?s=107

Five-star cornerback Anthony Cook joined Green at LSU's Spring Game and is one of the top targets for the Tigers as well. LSU has a bit of catching up to do in all likelihood, but if the Tigers can get it done, he'd be a huge land.

http://www.scout.com/player/203742-tyson-campbell?s=107

Teammate of Patrick Surtain at American Heritage, LSU would love to land Surtain and Tyson Campbell and be done. That'd give LSU two elite corners that have reasons to stick with commitments. LSU trails Miami right now in all likelihood, but when push comes to shove, will he join his teammate in Baton Rouge?

http://www.scout.com/player/206426-b-j-foster?s=107

When you look at best overall players, B.J. Foster jumps to the top of the list. If LSU can beat out Texas, one of the top prospects overall would be a huge pickup, even if it's at a stacked safety position. Foster plans to get back to Baton Rouge this summer.

http://www.scout.com/player/212643-leon-o-neal?s=107

The Scout 100 safety has yet to make it over to LSU, but plans to as he's said LSU is on him hard. While he's a safety, Leon O'Neal is a big-time player and would be a welcome addition for the Tigers. He's another best available take that might dwindle LSU's numbers at cornerback in the class, but it's tough to turn him down if LSU can make up enough ground in his recruitment.

At safety, LSU is done with Ar'darius Washington, Nadab Joseph and Caden Sterns committed.
