Destrehan DL attracts big names

Destrehan High School defensive tackle Darryl Richard is undoubtedly one of the top defensive linemen in the South, coveted by schools from coast to coast.

As the 2003 season nears and end, many coaches will be pleased to see that he's both a terror on the field and a wonder in the classroom.

The 6-4, 285-pounder has 70 tackles (21 for a loss), eight sacks and two forced fumbles in helping the Wildcats to a 7-2 record. He's also a top-notch student, scoring a 29 on the ACT and currently holding a 4.6 GPA.

Richard brings and excellent explosion to his position.

"I can get off and my first hit is always a shot," he says.

Choosing to focus more on his team's push towards the playoffs, Richard is downplaying his recruitment a little.

"It's been hectic," says Richard. "Right now I don't really have a favorite, I'm very wide open."

Richard says he currently doesn't have an official visit planned for LSU, but says they could pop in along with schools such as UCLA, Colorado, and Miami. He also recently visited Notre Dame.

"Coach (Tyrone) Willingham is definitely somebody I could play for," he says.

Still, Richard has taken some unofficial visits to LSU and definitely left Tiger Stadium impressed.

"Tiger Stadium is a great place to play. The fans are really into it the whole time."
