"I'd rather play defense," said Steltz. "But whatever the coaches want."
What LSU coaches want is to see the 6-2 202-pounder to sign his name on a letter-of-intent that will send him to Baton Rouge in 2004. With a nose for the ball and good size and speed, he'd be a welcome edition to any secondary.
Steltz is much more focused on the state 5A playoffs, as his Rummel Raiders will face of with defending state champions Evangel this weekend, the team that's eliminated Rummel each of the past two seasons.
"It's fun, but it gets annoying," says Steltz of the recruiting process. "Right now I'm just trying to block out things. I'm wide open I don't have any favorites, I'm waiting for the season to end first."
Steltz, who is fully qualified academically, said he does have an official visit to LSU set up for the third weekend in January, and has been to most of LSU's home games to watch his older brother Kevin, the Tigers starting fullback.
"Growing up, they've always been the school around here," says Steltz. "I grew up and LSU fan, and they're something to look for definitely.
Playoffs a priority for Steltz
