Lavalais named SEC Top Defender

For the second time in less than a month, LSU defensive tackle Chad Lavalais has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Tigers' 17-14 win over Ole Miss, the league office announced on Monday.

Lavalais, who is among five finalists for the Nagurski Award, which is presented to college football's top defensive player, led LSU with five tackles, including two for losses in the win over the Rebels.

Ole Miss and quarterback Eli Manning entered the game averaging 36 points and close to 500 yards of offense per game, both of which ranked first in the SEC.

For the year, Lavalais leads the Tigers with six sacks and 14 tackles for losses. Lavalais has 48 tackles, 20 quarterback hurries and one interception for the nation's No. 1 rated scoring defense. The Tigers also lead the nation in rush defense, allowing only 57.7 yards per game and they are third in the country in total defense, giving up only 256.7 yards a contest.

Lavalais earned his first SEC Player of the Week award following LSU's 31-7 win over Auburn back in October.
