Process dragging on for Mitchell

Xavier Mitchell of Long Beach, Miss., is one of the nation's top defensive end prospects and is high on the list of LSU coaches for the class of 2004.

Still, the 6-foot-4 240-pounder tells Tiger Rag that the recruiting process is starting to drag on him.

"It's getting old," says Mitchell. "It was fun at the beginning, but the calls are getting old. I just want to live my life and make my decision."

Mitchell says that decision will likely come down to Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, or Arizona State.

"I've already taken two visits, to Tennessee and Arizona State," says Mitchell. "I'm visiting LSU this weekend, Southern Miss the next, and then Ole Miss on Jan. 16."

Mitchell says his decision will likely be made after his final visit.

"It'll come down to how comfortable I am around the people and on the campus."

With one of the top defenses in the country, LSU would be an attractive destination for any top defensive player, but Mitchell says he's considering more than that.

"Yeah, they (LSU) have an awesome defense," he says. "But I want to go somewhere and make the defense great, too. I don't want just be a part of a great defense. I want to make it great."

Mitchell is fully qualified to play as a freshman.
