Steltz now a Tiger

LSU picked up its 18th commitment for the recruiting class of 2004 over the weekend with the pledge of Rummel safety Craig Steltz.

The 6-2 205-pound safety, rated third at his position by, had narrowed his choices to LSU, UCLA and Colorado, but eventually decided he'd rather be a Tiger than a Bruin or Buffalo. For Steltz, his family was the ultimate reason for his choice.

"Colorado and UCLA are all beautiful, but at the end of the day with my brother (Tigers fullback Kevin Steltz) at LSU, and with my family being close and all I just didn't want to go away," Steltz tells Tiger Rag.

"I just didn't like my parents not being there and my friends and family not being able to see me play," he says.

Steltz joins a group that is shaping up to be another top-rated recruiting class for Nick Saban's Tigers. He says a in-home visit from LSU's coach on December 12 helped him come to the conclusion that Baton Rouge was the place for him to be.

"Yeah, Coach Saban was here last Friday morning," Steltz says. "He's a cool guy but I already knew him well with Kevin and I'd been to practice last spring and stuff. My parents like him."
