Woodlawn's Jackson high on LSU's list

In recent years, Woodlawn-Baton Rouge High School has become a breeding ground for talented wide receivers.

In the last couple of season, the Purple Panthers have featured such talents as RoShon Jacobs (ULM), ChiJuan Mack (Oklahoma State) and Kentrell Gransberry (La. Tech). The most recent offensive star to emerge at Woodlawn is Brian Jackson.

Jackson, a 6-3, 195-pound wide receiver, made quite a splash last fall in his first season of high school football.

"He has only played one year of football," said Woodlawn head coach Dru Nettles. "Brian is a very athletic player. He is a basketball player, but the year before last we had a lot of success with basketball players on the football team and he turned out to be very good for us."

Those basketball players Nettles spoke of included Jacobs and Mack. Mack was a speed burner while Jacobs was more physical and a true possession receiver. Nettles said Jackson is somewhere in the middle.

"I think Brian is somewhere between RoShon and ChiJuan," Nettles said. "He is faster than RoShon but bigger than ChiJuan."

Nettles said grades will be Jackson's biggest obstacles, but he was confident Jackson could overcome it.

"He is close with grades, that will be the biggest things," Nettles said. "He is taking the test (ACT) in April, but he is okay with the core. New just have to see how the score comes out. Anyway, he is going to be a big, Division-I player for someone."

Nettles said Jackson has attracted interest "from every SEC school." Some programs in particular targeting Jackson are LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan State.

"Coach (Nick) Saban came and watched him at basketball practice," Nettles said. "As much as he (Saban) talks, he said he was very impressed with what he saw."

Jackson starred at small forward for the Panthers this season. He scored 29 points Woodlawn's first-round loss at Huntington-Shreveport two weeks ago. In his junior season on the gridiron, Jackson nabbed 43 receptions catching 16 touchdowns.
