West Monroe's Slocum one quick DE

Matt Slocum is a 6-foot-5, 250 pound defensive end from North Louisiana with 4.8-speed in the forty yard dash.

He earned first team All-State and first team All-District for West Monroe High School as a junior after posting 55 tackles, seven sacks, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

He has the speed and quickness to get around offensive tackles and he possesses the strength and power to be an effective run stopper.

"I can pretty much beat any block to the outside," Slocum told Tiger Rag. "I have a quick release off the line and I'm a pretty good pass rusher. I very rarely make mistakes on the field."

Slocum has not picked up any offers yet but he is hearing a lot from LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Colorado, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Tulane, Miami and most other schools from the South.

He is keeping an open mind until he has a chance to learn more about the schools recruiting him but four standout over the others.

"I like Miami, Florida, LSU and Ole Miss," he said. "They all have pretty good academics and a great environment. They all have pretty successful football teams too."

Texas A&M was not mentioned in his list of favorites and that was a bit surprising since his brother Andy just finished up his eligibility as a member of the Aggies' basketball team.

"I get a few letters from them but he hasn't said much about going over there," Matt said.

Academic success is a familiar tone in the Slocum household and Matt follows in the footsteps of his brother and sister with a 3.0 grade point average. He will take the ACT soon but qualifying should not even be a question.

Slocum plans on possibly making summer camps at LSU, Florida and Ole Miss. He also plans on traveling down to Baton Rouge for the LSU Spring Game on April 24.
