Covington's Leonard carries a cannon

When a quarterback can hurt you with his arm and his feet it makes it very tough for defenses to focus on just one area.

That describes the athletic signal caller Cory Leonard (6-1, 185, 4.6) of Covington (La.).

Leonard has a lot of what colleges are looking for with a good arm, good mobility and a very good knack for reading defenses and making good decisions. Those attributes may not wow scouts and coaches at combines but if there is talent around him then he will produce wins.

"I make good decisions," Leonard told The Insiders. "I'm not the biggest quarterback you will see and probably not the fastest but I have a good understanding of our offense. I read defenses pretty good too."

As a junior, Leonard threw for 1,250 yards and 14 touchdowns with an additional 550 yards and 12 scores on the ground. He is equally impressive in the classroom with a 3.2 grade point average and a 21 on the ACT.

The schools he is getting the most attention from and that make up his top five are Alabama, Auburn, Tulane, South Carolina and Maryland. Out of that list two schools have jumped to the top.

"My top favorites are Tulane and South Carolina," he said. "I met a coach from South Carolina before they started recruiting m and now he is on me heavy to go there. I know coaches and people up there so I like South Carolina a lot. With Tulane, I've met coach (Chris) Scelfo and the offensive coordinator and I liked them. I like the program they run."

Leonard made an unofficial visit to Alabama for the Crimson Tide's Junior Day and he left Tuscaloosa with a good impression on the direction the program is heading in.

"I thought coach Shula had a lot of good ideas and he is trying to get a program started," he said. "I liked the atmosphere a lot and it is kind of close to home. It was real nice and I liked it."

Leonard does not have any offers yet but there could be one on the way.

"I talked to my coach last week and he said Tulane told him they'll be offering me next week," he said.
