Slocum next in line at West Monroe

West Monroe High School in West Monroe (La.) has a history for sending football players to LSU to play their college football and another one could be on the way in 2005.

Matt Slocum is an All-State defensive end for the Rebels and he is drawing a lot of interest from the Tigers.

"I get stuff in the mail from them every day," he said. "They wanted me to go to one of their camps but I had a few setbacks and could not make it. They have not offered yet but they said they are interested. They want to wait until the season starts and see how good I do so they can make sure I am the right player for them."

At 6-5, 250 pounds and with 4.8-speed, Slocum has the tools to be an impact player on the Division-I level.

South Carolina recently entered the picture and was the first major school to extend an offer and Tulane did the same not too long afterwards.

South Carolina assistant coach Dave Roberts is recruiting Slocum and the two have a past relationship dating back to Roberts' days as head coach at UL-Monroe.

"I like South Carolina," Slocum said. "I talk to coach Roberts and he seems like the kind of guy I could play for. I'm going up there later this month to check them out and see everything."

Slocum will have plenty of schools to choose from by the time his senior campaign comes to an end because Auburn, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Tennessee and Arkansas send him letters on a regular basis.

Who stands out at this point?

"I really like South Carolina, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas and Notre Dame," he said.
