Tigers still hot on Atkins' trail

The LSU coaching staff is taking advantage of the Tigers' open date and is spread out all over the country recruiting this week.

LSU defensive backs coach Kirby Smart was at Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland on Monday to let Avery Atkins (5-11, 185, 4.45) know even though he committed to Florida the Tigers were still after him.

"I saw coach Smart today but he mainly talked to my coach," the standout cornerback told Tiger Rag. "He said they were still with me even though I made a soft verbal to Florida."

Atkins took an unofficial visit to Gainesville last weekend to check out two of his top five teams and the game lived up to all of the hype that surrounded it.

"It was a crazy game," he said. "Both teams played real hard but I guess the better team won."

Atkins said he still plans on taking an official visit to LSU but if everything stays on course it will have to be after the season.

"It's going to have to be in December after out state championship game," he said. "But I'm definitely going to take one there."

Tiger Rag asked him if LSU still had a legitimate shot at landing him and he replied, "Yes. I still feel good about LSU. Right now my options are still open and everybody is equal right now."

Who is everybody?

"Florida, LSU, Georgia, Florida State and Miami," he said.
