LSU eyes McClain for one of three OL spots

LSU needs to sign three to four top offensive linemen in the Class of 2005 and one that has caught the eye of Nick Saban and his staff is Doylestown (Penn.) Central Bucks offensive guard Dave McClain.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder committed to Maryland in February but he realized he may have made a premature decision and opened his recruitment back up to all takers.

LSU tight ends coach Leroy Ryals was one of the first coaches to start calling McClain after he de-committed and he has made quite an impression on the Pennsylvania native in just a short time.

"Coach Ryals is the greatest guy in the world," McClain told Tiger Rag. "He takes a different approach and treats you more as a friend rather than a recruit. I love talking to him and look forward to it every week."

Ryals traveled to Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago to see McClain in person and he got an unexpected up close look at the youngster.

"I ran into him in the hallway when I saw the LSU logo on his shirt," McClain said. "He came by to see how I looked and to compare me to the other offensive linemen they are recruiting. After he saw me he said to expect an offer but they wanted me to take a visit there so coach Saban could see me."

That visit will take place when the Tigers tangle with Ole Miss on Nov. 20. It will be an unofficial trip and one he is really geared up for.

"I am looking forward to seeing a game there and seeing the stadium," he said. "It's the sixth largest stadium in the country with something like 92,000. I'm also looking forward to meeting the coaches and the players. I want to see what southern football is all about."

Along with LSU, McClain said he has offers from Purdue, Temple and Rutgers. The list of schools that could be close to offering includes Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisville, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and Marshall.

How do the Tigers stack up against the competition?

"LSU is definitely in my top three," he said. "It's LSU, Tennessee and Purdue. I'm not sure how to rank the three but I do feel strongly about LSU. I'll know a lot more after I take my visits."
