Augustus named preseason All-American

Seimone Augustus, a junior guard on the LSU Lady Tigers' basketball team, was the top choice for the Associated Press' preseason All-America team, it was announced by the media organization on Tuesday.

Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, received 44 of 45 possible votes to earn the honor. She was joined on the five-player team by Minnesota's Janel McCarville, Kansas State's Kendra Wecker, Tennessee's Shyra Ely and Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast.

Augustus helped lead LSU to the program's first NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 by averaging 19.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game on her way to being named Kodak All-American and third-team AP All-American.

She was led all scorers in the NCAA Tournament with 24.2 points per game, including 29-point performances against both Texas and Georgia in the West Regional.

Along with teammate Temeka Johnson, Augustus is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year, the Women's Wooden Award and the Wade Trophy, all present to the nation's top player.

LSU and Augustus begin the 2004-05 campaign by hosting Maine, Arizona State and Virginia in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic on Thursday and Friday in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU will face Maine at 7 p.m. Thursday, while Virginia and Arizona State get things underway at 5 p.m. CST.
