Don't cross Shelley off the list just yet

Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside receiver Slick Shelley is a name some Tiger fans had crossed off their recruiting list but he is still very much interested in LSU and will take an official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend.

The 6-4, 180-pounder has a basketball game Friday night but he will leave bright and early on Saturday for his much-anticipated trip.

"I'm ready to go check out their facilities and stuff," Shelley told Tiger Rag. "I've heard a lot about their stadium and how the program has been so successful the last few years and I just want to see it for myself. I need to get a feel for the coaches, the players and the environment."

LSU receivers coach Todd Monken is scheduled to visit Shelley on Wednesday or Thursday to iron out the details on his upcoming trip.

Monken has played a huge role in keeping the big play wide out interested in the Tigers and he was one of the first recruits he contacted after moving to LSU.

"Coach Monken said when he walked in and saw my name on the old staff's board he was excited," Shelley said. "He flew here the next day and said I had an offer and he wanted me."

Whether LSU gets Shelley's signature remains to be seen but the Tigers' only challenger is Tennessee. He will visit Tennessee the last weekend in January and then it will be decision time.

"It's down to LSU and Tennessee," he said. "They are both the same but I will know where I am going after that last visit."
