Tillman becomes Tigers sixth commitment

After securing a pledge from the top defensive lineman in Louisiana last weekend in Al Woods, Les Miles can now add the top defensive lineman in Mississippi to his list of commitments for 2006. Marcus Tillman (6-4, 250, 4.8) of Meadville-Franklin gave Miles' recruiting efforts a huge boost on Saturday when he committed to the Tigers over offers from Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Auburn, Mississippi State, Florida and West Virginia.

"I wanted to get it off of my back so I could finish up strong in football and focus on my grades," said Tillman, who is fully qualified with a 3.2 GPA and a 19 on the ACT. "LSU was always at the top of my list and I have had a good feeling about them for a while. I did not know what to expect when coach Saban left but then I met coach Miles and knew everything would be good."

Miles has been on Tillman ever since he started recruiting for the 2006 class and made him one of his top targets at defensive end. The Magnolia State star will give the Tigers a tenacious pass rusher coming off the edge. Last season, he was one of the state's leaders in sacks with 16 and earned second team all-state honors on the way.

Tillman said he called Miles personally to tell him the news and he was glad to hear what the headman had to say.

"He said he was glad to have me," Tillman said. "He was excited and told me congratulations."

Over the last month Tillman has been listening to coaches pitch their programs but none could compare with everything LSU had to offer.

"I got family in Louisiana and it's like an hour and 15 minutes from home," he said. "I just like it over there. I have been there several times and it always felt like home. It's a good school and they always have good coaches. They really help their players a lot in the classroom and focus on getting an education and not just football."

Tillman is the sixth player to commit to commit the Tigers for 2006 and there are rumors circulating that Shomari Clemons also tendered his commitment over the weekend.

Tiger Rag spoke with Clemons on Thursday and he said it was only a matter of time until he pulled the trigger in favor of LSU. He could not be reached for comment late Sunday night.
