Eugene tops on Miles list

Tiger Rag's No. 1 player in the Bayou State for 2006 is Destrehan's Jai Eugene (6-1, 185, 4.4) and he could very well be the No. 1 guy Les Miles would like to sign for 2006.

Not only is Eugene one of the top targets on Miles' board, he also sits near the top of many of other recruiting boards from schools all across America.

He has everything coaches want in a cornerback. He has the size, the speed, the cover skills, and the confidence to go toe to toe with any receiver in the country.

Eugene says he is approaching 40 scholarship offers and over the past couple of weeks he has had coaches from the top programs in the country checking him out.

"There have been so many coaches coming by this spring," he said. "There has been LSU, USC, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan and a bunch more."

Some recruits get overwhelmed when they get as much attention as Eugene is getting but he looks at it as a reward for all of the time he has put in on the practice field and in the weight room.

"It's great," he said. "It's like a dream come true. I always wanted to be the best and when you get to meet all these coaches from these prestigious schools it makes you feel like all of that hard work is starting to pay off."

The star corner has not had a chance to talk to all of the head coaches that have extended a scholarship offer but two that he has gotten know are Miles and Pete Carroll of USC.

Who has made the bigger impression?

"They are pretty much the same," he said. "They are both real with you and answer any question you have straight forward. Those two guys I have a lot of respect for."

Eugene said he knows the most about LSU at this point mainly because he talks to Miles at least once a week. The two have built a strong relationship that reaches far beyond the football field.

"We talk a lot about my baby and the programs they have that would help my family," said Eugene. "They have a lot of programs that you can benefit from outside of football. We talk about so much other stuff besides football."

There has been some talk on internet message boards that he could be a secret commitment to the Tigers.

When asked if there was any truth to that, he replied, "Not really," with a laugh. "I like them a lot but I still want to take some visits and see some other places."
