Tiger Rag sit-down with Rayville RB

Rayville (La.) running back Richard Murphy (6-1, 193, 4.5) is one of the top running backs on Les Miles' recruiting board for 2006.

The Tigers have been at the top of his list since Miles gave him an offer in February and Tiger Rag caught up with the blue-chip prospect to see if things remained the same.

Tiger Rag: What schools have given you an offer? Murphy: LSU, Auburn, Florida, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Southern and UL-Monroe.

Tiger Rag: What camps have you been to this summer? Murphy: I went to Ole Miss and Texas A&M so far. I didn't take part in the camp though. I just checked out the campus and talked to the coaches. The coaches told me I didn't have to workout or anything because they already knew they wanted me.

Tiger Rag: Do you plan on making anymore camps or is that it? Murphy: I'm going to LSU's camp in July and I also plan on making Auburn's in July.

Tiger Rag: Richard, everybody knows about the torn ACL you suffered last season. How is the rehab going? Murphy: It's going good. I'm squatting and getting the knee a lot stronger. I'm running well on it and I'd say I'm about 95 percent.

Tiger Rag: When I spoke to you during the May evaluation period you said there was a chance you would commit before your senior year. Is that still the case? Murphy: Yes. That is still the plan. I talked to coach (Bo) Barton (Rayville head coach) and he wants me to go ahead and commit before the season starts so I can focus on our season. I'm going to talk to him when I get back from LSU and Auburn and then we will probably make a decision.

Tiger Rag: Have you narrowed things down yet? Murphy: LSU, Auburn and Florida are the main three in no particular order.

Tiger Rag: What stands out with each of those three? LSU-They run the ball a lot and they're losing some running backs. It's close to home too. I've been to LSU before and I like the campus a lot. They have some good facilities and I feel real comfortable there. Auburn-They run the ball a lot too and they're hurting at the running back spot. I've never been to their campus so I'm looking forward to going there. Florida-I grew up hearing everybody talk about the Gators and I've just always liked them.

Tiger Rag: How big of a factor will staying close to home play in your decision? Murphy: It will be a pretty big influence on my decision.

Tiger Rag: Does the distance factor give LSU an edge over the others? Murphy: Yes sir. On the weekend I could go home and visit my family and friends plus they could see me play.

Tiger Rag: Richard, would say that LSU is the team to beat? Murphy: Yes sir.

Tiger Rag: Is it going to be hard for Auburn, Florida or any other school to beat LSU for your signature? Murphy: Yes sir.

Tidbits: Murphy ran for 2,147 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior and was named first team all-state. He has already amassed 5,500 yards rushing in his career. He reports a 2.6 GPA/16 ACT--June retake (waiting on results).
