LSU spirit squads total 13 awards

The LSU Spirit Squads, composed of the LSU cheerleaders, Tiger Girl dance team and Mike the Tiger mascots, recently returned from their annual summer collegiate Cheer and Dance Camp with 13 team awards and honors, their most rewarding camp experience in over 10 years.

The Tiger cheerleaders received three first place awards (Varsity, JV Cheer and JV sideline) along with two third place honors (Varsity Sideline and Varsity Fight Song). The squad was named "Most Collegiate," an award given by the camp staff to the squad that most exemplifies what a college squad should be.

Additionally, both of the Tiger cheerleading squads received the Leadership Award, an award voted on by all the schools in attendance, as well as being awarded a Superior honor for their efforts at the camp.

The Tiger Girl dance team also walked away with the camp's Leadership Award and finished first among the 20-plus teams in attendance for their home routine. In addition, the team was named the squad with the most improved dance program; quite a feat for a team that finished third nationally at the 2005 Hip Hop Collegiate Nationals.

The Tiger Girls also received 32 blue superior ribbons, which were awarded to individual dancers, and a Superior honor for their efforts at camp.

Not to be left out, LSU's Mike the Tiger mascot received a third place honor in the Best Overall Mascot category.

Held by the Universal Cheer Association and Universal Dance Association at the University of Alabama, the collegiate camp included over 30 total teams from across the southeast and as well as Oklahoma and Ohio. The camp serves as preparation for the upcoming season and teaches teams proper technique, guidelines and material to use to help best motivate their crowds.
