A major online sports auction will highlight the effort, with one hundred percent of the proceeds going directly to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that builds homes for low-income families. The website AllCoachesCare.com has been created to provide more information on and to give coaches a place where they can make their contribution to the online auction.
"This is something that all coaches, male and female, at every level must get involved with," says Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg who is heading up the effort among coaches. "As coaches we always talk about the team concept. If we are going to make any impact on the hurricane relief efforts, we need to come together as a team to assist all those who desperately need our help."
Greenberg is the organizing chairman of the committee which includes Brady, Brian Cleary (Cincinnati), Joe Dwyer (AllCoachNetwork.com), Orlando Early (Louisiana-Monroe), Tim Floyd (USC), Frank Haith (Miami), Angela Lento (AllCoachNetwork.com), Rick Stansbury (Mississippi State), John Thompson III (Georgetown) and Willis Wilson (Rice). But Greenberg is stressing that all coaches need to be involved.
"I can't stress that point enough. Everyone should be involved. As coaches we are always rebuilding our programs," he said. "Coaches Care was created to help and now we have an opportunity to help rebuild the Gulf Coast of the United States working with the great folks at Habitat for Humanity."
"This has moved all of us," said Brady, whose basketball program will offer two tickets to the LSU-Kentucky basketball game at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center next February for the auction. "We have all in some way, shape or form been touched by the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. I am happy to join the coaches in coming together for this effort to help our friends in need."
The organizing committee has already confirmed the participation of many high profile coaches including Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech, Tom Izzo of Michigan State, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, Lute Olson of Arizona and Texas Tech Head Coach Bob Knight.
As just one example, Knight has donated a Big 12 Tournament Experience with two tickets in Dallas for the 2006 Phillips Big 12 Tournament.
The goal of the organizers is to raise money through an online auction and cash donations. AllCoachNetwork.com will administer the auction in conjunction with Snappy Auctions eBay Drop-Off Stores. SnappyAuctions.com will handle all of the listing and shipping of items for the auction, which will begin on Sept. 14 on eBay.
