Virginia star McDaniel re-schedules LSU trip

This weekend is shaping up to be a huge recruiting weekend for the LSU coaching staff with several high-profile prospects scheduled to make official visits to Tiger Town.

Several highly touted players have already confirmed their itinerary for this weekend but there is one guy who had to cancel his trip on short notice.

"As of right now I probably will not make it in this weekend," said Virginia Beach (Va.) Landstown receiver Damon McDaniel. "My dad really wants to go with me and right now he can't make it this weekend."

McDaniel (5-11, 192, 4.5) called LSU defensive backs coach Doug Mallory on Sunday night to tell him he probably needed to reschedule his trip. Shortly after he got off the phone with Mallory another LSU coach called to let him know he was still a top priority for this year's class.

"Coach (Todd) Monken called to make sure everything was okay," McDaniel said. "He was telling me that they really need someone to replace Skyler Green. They need someone to play the slot position and return kicks. I told him I was still looking at them and not to worry. I told him I'm still going to visit down there."

Virginia is not considered fertile recruiting ground for LSU by any stretch of the imagination so what was it that sparked an interest in the Tigers on McDaniel's part?

"I like how they play at such a high level and have so many good players," he said. "The program is a great football program and they have great fans. I've talked to the coaches a pretty good bit and they seem nice and down to earth."

Along with LSU, McDaniel said there are four other schools he is looking at. He has one official visit under his belt and that trip has given one school a slight edge.

"It's down to Florida, LSU, Miami, Ohio State and Florida State," he said. "Florida kind of stands out a little more than the others because I've been there and had a good visit. That is the only place I've been to so far so it's really hard to judge everybody else. But, right now they stand out a little more."
