LSU improving on defense

LSU continued its climb up the national statistical rankings on Sunday, a day after holding Urban Meyer's potent spread-option offensive attack to just 17 points and only 206 yards of offense in the 21-17 win over Florida.

With all-conference quarterback Chris Leak leading the way, the Tigers held the Gators to only 11 completions and 107 yards passing in the victory. The Tigers also sacked Leak five times and held the Gators to only 11 first downs.

The Tigers remain atop the Southeastern Conference and rank No. 3 in the nation in rushing defense, holding opponents to just 69.8 yards per game. Nebraska leads the nation by allowing 65 yards rushing per game, while Ohio State is second at 66.2 yards per contest.

Overall, the Tiger defense has leaped all the way to No. 14 in the nation in total defense, limiting the opposition to 290.6 yards per game, a figure that ranks fifth in the conference. Miami ranks first in the country in total defense, holding opponents to 227 yards per contest.

In LSU's last three games, the Tiger defense has given up only 30 points to go with 573 total yards. Of the 573 total yards yielded by the LSU defense, 180 have come on the ground with 393 coming through the air.

LSU goes into the Auburn game having not allowed a passing touchdown since the first quarter of the Mississippi State, a streak that spans 11 quarters.

LSU ranks first in the SEC and fifth in the nation in net punting, averaging 40.1 per kick. LSU's punt return unit, led by Skyler Green, ranks 10th in the country with a 16.2 average per return.

Offensively, the Tigers are third in the SEC with 30.8 points per game and they are fifth in the league in rushing yards with a 157.4 average. The Tigers are fifth in the league in total offense with 386.4 yards per game.

Individually, LSU running back Joseph Addai moved atop the league charts in rushing with a 107.4 yard average. Addai is coming off his best game as a Tiger, running for a career-best 152 yards on a career-high 32 attempts. He also scored the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run.

Through five games, Addai has rushed for 537 yards and six touchdowns. Addai has scored a rushing TD in all five games this year for the Tigers.
