Ranked… No. 6 in first BCS poll. The LSU Tigers debuted in the No. 6 spot in the first BCS poll last week. Two other SEC teams, Alabama (4th) and Georgia (5th), are in the top six. LSU opens in this season's poll six spots higher than it did in 2003, the year the Tigers won the national title.
Released… Alabama wide receiver Tyrone Prothro from the hospital after breaking his leg in two places in the Crimson Tide's 31-3 win over Florida. Prothro remained hospitalized for nearly three weeks after undergoing surgery, plus he was treated after developing an infection in his surgically repaired leg.
Urged… The NCAA by the American Psychological Association to ban all American Indian mascots from college sports. Earlier this year, the NCAA prohibited schools from using American Indian mascots, nicknames or other signage in postseason play. Several schools appealed, most notably Florida State. "American Indian mascots are harmful not only because they are often negative, but because they remind American Indians of the limited ways in which others see them," said APA representative Stephen Fryman. "This in turn restricts the number of ways American Indians can see themselves."

Reprimanded… Several employees of Canes Vision, the company that operates the video screens in Carter-Finley Stadium, for producing the very inappropriate "Mexi-Cam." A spoof on the typical jumbo-tron hysteria of "Kiss-Cam" or "Fan-Cam," a couple of unnamed technicians developed Mexi-Cam to scout out Latin-Americans attend N.C. State's 31-10 loss to Clemson. No one was fired, those responsible were "disciplined."
Visited… USC's locker room after the Trojans beat Notre Dame 38-34 in South Bend two weekends ago. Fighting Irish coach Charlie Weis, along with 12-year-old son Charlie, Jr., paid Pete Carroll and the Trojans a visit after the epic clash. "It's easy to be gracious when you've won a game. "It's tough to be gracious after you've lost one, especially a game as heart-wrenching as that." After the visit, Weis and his son sat and talked about what they had just done." I thought it would be a good lesson for him," coach Weis said.
