Mitchell earns SEC Frosh of the Week

LSU's Tasmin Mitchell was named the first Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in the opening game of the season Friday night against Southern University.

Mitchell and the Tigers are in action Monday night against Nicholls State at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Mitchell, from Denham Springs, posted a double-double in his collegiate debut versus the Jaguars scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. In 36 minutes, Mitchell hit 8-of-15 field goal attempts, including two-of-three treys and one free throw to go with one assist and four steals. In the opener, Mitchell turned the ball over just one time.

The double-double by Mitchell marks the third consecutive year an LSU freshman has double-doubled in his first collegiate contest for the Tigers. In 2003, Brandon Bass of Baton Rouge had a double-double against Southern, while last year, Glen Davis of Baton Rouge came off the bench to double up against Tulane. Both player went on to strong seasons and were named league freshmen of the year.

Mitchell has the early lead among all league freshmen in scoring and rebounding. Mitchell entered LSU after being named Mr. Basketball by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association following his senior season at Denham Springs.
