Thomas named SEC Freshman of the Week

LSU's Tyrus Thomas became the second LSU freshman to be honored by the SEC this season, as he was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his play last week against Tulane and Connecticut.

Against Tulane (Jan. 3, a 75-58 LSU win), Thomas had 20 points and nine rebounds while shooting 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Thomas added two assists, four blocks and two steals in 27 minutes of playing time.

Thomas also came up big in the one-point, 67-66, loss at No. 2 Connecticut on Saturday, posting a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with his second blocks. Thomas has had double-doubles in four of the last five games and has a league-leading eight for the season.

Thomas is presently averaging 13.9 points per game and a league-leading 9.8 rebounds a game. He also leads the league in block average at 3.1 a contest.

LSU travels to Fayetteville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to open SEC play against the University of Arkansas. The Tigers return home Saturday to meet Tennessee at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in a game that has a start time of 7 p.m. on Fox Sports Net. Some early schedules have the game at 5 p.m., but it was moved earlier in the fall to the later starting time in the FSN doubleheader.
