Track team at preseason #5

LSU's men's track and field team is listed at No. 5 in the country in the first Trackwire 25 rankings of the 2006 season, released Tuesday.

The rankings, based on a projected score at the NCAA meet, list the Tigers with 31 points. Defending national champion, Arkansas, tops the standings with 54 points. The Hogs are followed by Florida State (53), Wisconsin (45) and Texas (38).

The Tigers are led by sophomore Xavier Carter and the 4x400 relay team that each earned top billing in the first, "Dandy Dozen," of the year, a listing of the top 12 athletes or teams in each individual event.

Carter is listed at No. 1 in the 200 meters, an event in which he earn NCAA runner-up honors a year ago. In addition to being ranked seventh in the 60-meter dash, Carter is also a member of the Tigers' 4x400 relay team that holds down the No. 1 ranking. The Tigers return three of the four athletes off the foursome that won the NCAA Outdoor title in collegiate record time a year ago.

Also ranked for the Tigers are seniors Kelly Willie and Darion Powell. Willie is listed at No. 3 in the 400 meters and Powell, a transfer from Washington State, is sixth in the decathlon.

The Lady Tigers have five athletes and a relay team listed among the Dandy Dozen. Sophomore All-American Kelly Baptiste is ranked seventh in the 200 meters and eighth in the 60 meters.

Transfers Kathy Coleman and Shaunette Davidson are ranked in the long jump and high jump, respectively. Coleman, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump last week, is listed at No. 9 in the event, while Davidson is 10th in the high jump.

Also in the rankings are sophomore Deonna Lawrence (10th, 400 meters) and the 4x400 relay team (11th).

The Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this Saturday when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Lobo Invitational.
