LSU tabbed for 2nd in West

The Southeastern Conference baseball coaches voted LSU to finish second in the SEC Western Division according to the league's 2006 preseason poll released Tuesday.

LSU was selected to finish behind Mississippi State, which was voted the No. 1 team in the West. The Tigers, however, were predicted to win the overall league championship by three of the coaches.

Florida is the favorite to win the 2006 SEC title, as eight coaches selected the Gators as the conference champion.

Arkansas, predicted to finish third in the SEC West, also received one vote to win the overall conference crown.

LSU, ranked No. 15 by Collegiate Baseball magazine in its preseason poll, returns five position starters and seven pitchers from its 2005 squad that won the SEC West with an 18-12 mark. The '05 Tigers finished 40-22 overall and played host to an NCAA Regional in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU has won 13 overall league titles and 13 division championships in its history. The Tigers have captured four SEC West titles and one overall SEC championship this decade.

Florida, ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason polls following last season's national runner-up finish, seeks to capture its 11th SEC Championship, having won the title three times in the past 10 seasons (1996, 1998 & 2005).  Florida returns seven position starters and 10 of 14 pitchers from their 2005 squad which advanced to the national championship round of the College World Series.

A total of seven SEC clubs are ranked in the preseason top 25 polls. The 2006 season gets underway this weekend with Auburn hosting VMI and Tennessee traveling to Florida Atlantic in a pair of three-game series.

The conference schedule is set to begin the weekend of March 17-19.  The 2006 SEC Tournament will be held May 24-28 at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Ala. The 2005 SEC Baseball Tournament drew 119,580 fans, including 12,290 for the championship game.

Nearly 1.5 million fans attended games in the SEC last season, the fourth year in a row the SEC has topped the one million mark in attendance, leading the nation once again in that category.
