Mitchell, Fowles named LSWA Players of Week

LSU senior guard Darrel Mitchell and sophomore center Sylvia Fowles were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association state college basketball players announced Wednesday.

Mitchell had 20-plus point games against both Georgia and Ole Miss in his week, while Fowles became the fourth player in women's school history to score 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game against Vanderbilt.

Mitchell scored 24 points in 29 minutes in a home 81-52 win against Georgia and then proceeded to add 28 more in a 79-73 triumph at Ole Miss. Mitchell hit 17-of-25 field goals, including 10-of-14 three-point attempts in the two games. The St. Martinville, La., native is averaging 17.9 points per game, 4.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists for the Tigers, 6-0 in league play entering Wednesday's game versus Auburn.

Fowles led LSU to a 75-63 victory over Vanderbilt, scoring a career high 26 points with a career-best 22 rebounds in just 29 minutes of play. She became the first LSU player in 12 years to record a 20-20 night and just the fourth player in school history in women's basketball to accomplish the feat. Fowles was 10-of-18 shooting from the floor in the game.
