Melancon (6-1, 270, 4.7) is one of the top d-linemen in the South for 2007 and he will be one of the most heavily recruited players in the Bayou State.
As a freshman, Melancon burst onto the scene when he was voted first team all-state and his district's most valuable player on the defensive side of the ball.
Melancon's production never dropped off over his sophomore and junior seasons as he recorded 198 tackles with 48 behind the line of scrimmage, 14 sacks, and 12 forced fumbles.
Just as he did when he was freshman, Melancon took home all-state honors as a junior and now he has two of those MVP trophies sitting in his room.
Ole Miss has already offered and schools from all over are already calling Lutcher head coach Tim Detillier. The long and distinguished list of suitors includes Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, West Virginia, Auburn, and of course, the state's flagship school.
"Karl Dunbar really liked "Ro" and I know LSU is going to be after him," Detillier said.
What was it that caught the eye of Dunbar and so many other coaches?
"Probably his explosiveness and intangibles," Detillier said. "On the football field, Ro gets it. He understands the game. He has made all of the calls and alignments on defense since he was a freshman."
Melancon may go up against guys who are bigger than he is but he has something to offset their size advantage.
"His explosive first step makes him so tough to block," Detillier said. "He really moves well laterally and that allows him to make plays all over the field. He models himself after Warren Sapp and LSU fans would compare him to Chad Lavalais, Claude Wroten and Henry Thomas."
To be mentioned in the same breath as those four players speaks volumes on his potential and if he follows the same path that those four took then Melancon will be a household name at the next level.
By the Numbers: 295-Bench/455-Squat/265-Clean/29"-Vertical/4.55-Shuttle/2.5 GPA/No test score to report.
