Davis on top 30 list for Naismith Trophy

Thirty of the country's top collegiate men's basketball players, including LSU sophomore forward Glen Davis, were named as mid-season candidates for the Naismith Trophy presented by Cingular Wireless, as announced Monday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious national award presented annually to the men and women's players of the year.

The top 30 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country.  The board based its criteria on player performances this season. The list was narrowed down from the pre-season list of 50 candidates who were announced at the beginning of the season.

The final ballot will be issued in March when the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors announces four finalists for the award. The Naismith Trophy winner will be named at the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.

Davis, from Baton Rouge, is averaging 17.7 points per game, third in scoring in the Southeastern Conference, and is the league leader in rebound at 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Also on the list is Louisiana Tech junior forward Paul Millsap and the only other player in the group of 30 from the SEC is Kentucky's Rajon Rondo.
