One of those blue-chips coaches are keeping an eye on is Lafayette-St. Thomas More safety/linebacker Grant Fleming.
Fleming is a 6-3, 205-pounder with 4.5 speed. He plays safety for the Cougars but depending on how much weight he puts on over the next couple of years will determine whether or not he moves to linebacker.
Fleming put everyone on notice his sophomore year when he registered 91 tackles, picked off nine passes, and claimed several post-season honors including all-state, all-parish, and All-Acadiana.
This past season, opponents tried to neutralize the big-hitting safety and they had some moderate success. His production dropped off to 77 total tackles, two sacks and five pass break ups in 13 games.
"Grant had such an outstanding sophomore year that teams did not attack the middle of the field at all," said St. Thomas More assistant coach Tim Leger. "The result was reduced opportunities for Grant to produce the same numbers he had as a sophomore."
Although his production may have tapered off some between his sophomore and junior seasons, Fleming will still be one of the top prospects in Louisiana for '07.
"Grant is big, physical, fast and intelligent," Leger said. "He has everything coaches are looking for in outside linebackers and strong safeties. He is a true impact player."
Leger said that plenty of coaches have been inquiring about his defensive gem and he rattled off schools like LSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Auburn and Ole Miss as some schools to watch.
St. Thomas More always has prospects that college coaches target and Leger thinks Fleming could be one of his biggest prizes in quite a while.
"Every four or five years we have a big-time prospect that everybody likes and Grant is going to be one of them," Leger said. "He could end up being one of the best ones we had come through here."
