Hofer takes first SEC Freshman of Year Award

After posting a shutout win over No. 11 Washington in the Easton Tiger Classic last weekend, LSU's Dani Hofer was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

The Safety Harbor, Fla., native notched a pair of wins as the Tigers went undefeated in the tournament, improving to 12-0 on the season. In her two appearances, she allowed one run on 10 hits while striking out 12 for a 0.50 earned run average.

Against the 11th-ranked Huskies, Hofer earned her first collegiate win over a nationally ranked opponent. In the complete-game effort, she allowed just three hits while striking out seven. In the Tiger Classic semifinal game, she topped Western Kentucky, giving up just one run in the sixth inning, the first runner in scoring position the Hilltoppers had in the game. With the tying run on second in that inning, she struck out the WKU batter on three straight pitches to end the inning.

For the season, Hofer is 4-0 with a 0.54 earned run average. She has struck out a season-best 39 batters, while opponents are hitting just .136 against her. In her first collegiate appearance, she threw a no-hitter against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

This is the first SEC Freshman of the Week honor for Hofer in her career and the first conference honor for the Tigers this season. LSU returns to play at home on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Texas Southern beginning at 4 p.m. The Tigers then travel to the Palm Springs Classic to take on No. 2 UCLA, No. 12 Oregon State, Texas Tech and UC-Santa Barbara. LSU's final tournament game against No. 7 Stanford will be televised on ESPNU.
