Softball moves up to #19 ranking

After knocking off Washington twice in the Easton Tiger Classic, the LSU softball team moved up six spots in the ESPN/USA Softball poll this week as the Tigers prepare to close out a 14-game home stand with a doubleheader against Texas Southern on Wednesday at Tiger Park beginning at 4 p.m.

The games will be broadcast live in Baton Rouge on KLSU - 91.1 FM, LSU's on-campus student radio station. In addition, the live stats will be available on

LSU is 12-0 and off to its best start in school history, topping the 11-1 mark set by the 2001 team that advanced to the Women's College World Series. The Tigers improved from No. 25 to No. 19 this week, marking their second consecutive week in the poll and the 41st overall week in the ESPN/USA Softball poll for LSU.

The TSU Lady Tigers are 1-5 on the year, with their only win coming in extra innings against Prairie View A&M, 4-3. They have dropped two straight with losses to Incarnate Word, 9-1 in five innings, and Texas-Tyler, 7-2.

"It is always exciting to get to play games at home," said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. "We look forward to playing a lot of people in this doubleheader. We will also be trying to fix the little things that need to be corrected as we head into this huge weekend."

Tiger junior Leslie Klein was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tiger Classic last weekend. She went 9-for-17 (.529) with two doubles, one RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases. She currently leads the team with a .559 season batting average, including four doubles, a triple, home run and 11 RBIs.

Sophomore Quinlan Duhon was also named to the all-tournament team after hitting .438 on the weekend with three doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. As a team, LSU is hitting at a .374 clip on the season, including an incredible 31 doubles with two triples and 10 home runs.

In the circle, junior Emily Turner and freshman Dani Hofer picked up Tiger Classic All-Tournament team honors. Turner went 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average, while earning a 4-0 win over the nationally ranked Huskies. Hofer also posted a 2-0 mark with a win over Washington.

For the season, the Tiger hurlers have allowed only two runs in 12 games for a 0.19 earned run average. In addition, LSU has picked up 10 complete game shutouts while averaging almost 10 strikeouts per seven innings.

Texas Southern is led by Erika Acosta with a .429 batting average, including four RBIs. As a team, the Lady Tigers are batting .191 on the season with only one extra base hit, a double by Briana Woods.

In the circle, Nyshell Jones picked up the only win for Texas Southern and is 1-2 on the season with a 5.40 ERA. The Lady Tigers have a 9.27 team earned run average on the season with 22 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.

This will be the first meeting between the Tigers and Texas Southern, and also the first meeting for Girouard against the Lady Tigers. LSU boasts a 20-0 record against Southwestern Athletic Conference members all-time.

This weekend, the Tigers will take to the road for the first time this season. LSU will participate in the three-day Palm Springs Classic. The Tigers will face No. 3 UCLA and No. 11 Oregon State on Friday before taking on Texas Tech and UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday. LSU will close out the tournament against No. 6 Stanford on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
