He's a Tiger

Tiger Rag was the first to report that John Williams committed to LSU and with the help of Yancy Porter of Scout.com we were able to break the story.

Williams, a 5-10, 175-pounder with 4.5 speed, is a big pickup for the Tigers because he is one of the top athletes in the South for 2007.

As a junior at Breaux Bridge High School, Williams earned first team all-state honors on both sides of the ball at free safety and as an athlete.

The standout performer ran for 967 yards and 15 touchdowns and passed for another 901 yards and eight more scores from his quarterback spot. Defensively, he picked off eight passes with one going all the way back for six and added 96 total tackles. As if that was not enough, the jack-of-all trades returned 19 kicks for 627 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams was the second pledge for the Tigers in the class of 2007 and when he pulled the trigger Les Miles was a happy camper.

"He was real excited," Williams told Tiger Rag. "He brought me into his office and said he wanted to offer. I told him thanks coach and I accept your offer."

Some project Williams as a free safety for the next level and others say wide receiver. However, Miles may have something different in mind.

"He said they like me as an athlete but when we talked about a position he said he likes me at running back," said Williams. "I played there before and I may play some as a senior."

Williams said he always wanted to play for the Tigers and a couple of hours after he made his commitment he still could not express how it felt.

"It still hadn't set in," said Williams, who also has an offer from Ole Miss. "I really can't describe how it feels but it feels great."

Williams said he has the GPA and test score to meet NCAA eligibility requirements and now he can focus on his senior year.

Tiger Rag will have a full update Sunday evening on LSU's Junior Day but if something else breaks before then we will be here to bring you the news.
