Tigers to face Southeastern

No. 14 LSU faces Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday at Zephyr Field in Metairie as the teams meet for the second time this season.

LSU, which has won the last nine meetings between the schools, defeated SLU, 7-3, on Feb. 21 in Baton Rouge. LSU is 28-2 against the Lions since 1990 -- SLU's only wins in that span came in 1991 (15-2) and in 2002 (4-3), both in Alex Box Stadium.

"We're looking to get better this week," said LSU coach Smoke Laval, "and it starts by facing a very capable Southeastern club. We've got a difficult task at hand before we get back into SEC play against Mississippi State."

LSU plays host to Mississippi State – ranked No. 1 by Baseball America – this weekend in Alex Box Stadium.

Laval said sophomore right-hander Michael Bonura (1-0) is scheduled to start on the mound against SLU. Bonura, who missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his elbow, will make his first start since May 19, 2004 when he faced Southeastern Louisiana in Baton Rouge. Bonura defeated the Lions in that outing, limiting SLU to two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of an eight-inning contest.

Bonura earned his first victory since the 2004 game versus SLU when he defeated Houston last month in a relief role. Bonura pitched 3.2 scoreless relief innings against Houston to secure the win. He allowed four hits while recording no walks and two strikeouts.

First-year SLU coach Jay Artigues is scheduled to counter Wednesday with senior right-hander Jeremy Mizell (5-1), a product ot Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge. Mizell is the Lions' No. 1 pitcher for their Southland Conference weekend series; however, he is available to pitch against LSU Wednesday because the Lions have no games scheduled this weekend.

LSU is led at the plate by senior right fielder Quinn Stewart, who is hitting .358 (29-for-81) with five doubles, two triples and eight homers. Stewart launched a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Sunday to erase a 2-1 deficit and lift LSU to a win at Kentucky. Stewart was down 0-2 to UK reliever Andrew Albers before working the count back to 2-2 and unloading his eighth homer of the season.

The game-winning homer Sunday was also Stewart's seventh dinger in his last 10 games. For the entire Kentucky series, Stewart was 4-for-11 at the plate with two doubles, one homer, one run and four RBI.

Stewart is complemented in the LSU lineup by freshman infielder J.T. Wise (.363, 6 2B, 1 HR, 14 RBI) and sophomore shortstop Michael Hollander (.357, 4 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 21 RBI).

Senior Jason Waguespack leads Southeastern at the plate with a .318 average and is second on the team with 12 RBI. Richard Imhoff (.302-2-10) and Bryan Frichter (.301-1-11) are also hitting above .300 on the season for the Lions with Ryan Spencer pacing the team with 13 RBI.
