Tigers sliding in SEC standings

It was a rough weekend for Smoke Laval's Tigers. LSU needed 11 innings to top UNO in a midweek clash, then the Tigers were swept at home by South Carolina over the weekend.

Notes on the Tigers

 

LSU junior right-hander Derik Olvey delivered a fantastic performance in a 2-1 loss to South Carolina Sunday, as he recorded a career-best 11 strikeouts . . .

 

Olvey, a native of Pelham, Ala., limited the Gamecocks – who entered the game as the SEC's best hitting team – to two runs (one earned) on four hits in nine innings with three walks and 11 Ks . . .

 

Olvey is 5-1 on the season with a team-best 2.32 ERA . . .

 

LSU earned its first extra-inning victory of the season on March 28 when the Tigers defeated New Orleans, 6-5, in 11 innings . . .

 

Freshman infielder Jason Ogata's two-out RBI double in the top of the 11th lifted the Tigers to the win at UNO . . .

 

Reliever Chase Dardar earned the victory by working 1.2 scoreless innings and he struck out four of the five batters he faced . . .

 

Freshman infielder J.T. Wise enjoyed another productive weekend at the plate, batting .333 (5-for-15) in four games with one double, two homers, three RBI and three runs . . .

 

Wise, a true freshman from Apopka, Fla., is the Tigers' leading hitter, batting .360 (40-for-111) on the year with nine doubles, four homers and 18 RBI . . .

 

Senior right fielder Quinn Stewart launched two homers in four games last week to increase his SEC-leading home run total to 12 . . .

 

Stewart is hitting .348 (39-for-112) this season with with seven doubles, two triples, 12 homers and 35 RBI . . .

 

LSU plays host to crosstown rival Southern University on Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium in a rare mid-week day game as the contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. . . .

 

The LSU-Southern game will mark the Tigers' first regular-season mid-week day game at home since February of 1995, when the Tigers defeated Centenary in Alex Box Stadium.
